Provisional Ball In a Stroke Play Tournament...Nancy teed off and her ball went towards an out of bounds area. However, Nancy could not tell from the tee area if the ball actually went out of bounds. Nancy decides to play a provisional ball from the tee box, and announces to the competitors in her group that she is going to hit a second drive with a provisional ball. This will be her third shot, if she ends up using the provisional ball. The provisional ball may be played until Nancy reaches the spot where the original drive was thought to be located. If Nancy hits the provisional ball at the point where the original drive was thought to be located, or past that point, then the provisional ball becomes the ball in play. Note that Nancy cannot hit a provisional ball if she thinks she has hit her original drive into a water hazard. If she thinks that she has hit a ball into a water hazard, then she should use the rules for water hazard described earlier. If Nancy found her original ball within five minutes, and it was still in bounds, she can play that original ball and pick up the provisional ball. Note that if Nancy forgot to make the announcement she was hitting a provisional ball, then ball automatically becomes in play, even original later found be bounds.
