Spike Marks and Ball marks on the Green

In a Stroke Play Tournament...

Don can repair ball marks on the green before he putts, but he cannot repair spike marks on the green along the line of his putt. If he repairs a spike mark on the green before he putts, he will get a two stroke penalty. Note that Don could pick up a few loose pebbles on the line between his ball and the hole. However, if he brushed the grass with his hand to move the pebbles and moved the blades of grass, there would be a two stroke penalty.
